What would Christmas be without Christmas cookies! After all, Santa expects them when he stops by. Yes, it makes sense: Christmas cookies and Christmas go together ... like peanut butter and jelly!

What is your favorite?
Mine is the "Snowball Cookie". OK, Russian Tea Cakes or Mexican Wedding Cookies, to be exact ... but they look like snowballs to me! LOL
I love the buttery flavor with just a hint of walnut-crunch all covered in a snowy powdered sugar wrap! Yum!

Here is a classic sugar cookie recipe for you called "Mary's Sugar Cookies". The rest you can get right from their site.
I've never made this particular kind of Christmas cookie-cutter cookie with cream of tartar before but the recommendations are so high that I think we'll have to trust the experts. I'll be testing it out next weekend and I'll get back to you with my opinion!
Ingredients
1 cup butter, softened
1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 teaspoon almond extract
2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
Granulated sugar
Directions
Mix together sugar and butter. Add egg, vanilla, and almond extract; mix well. Blend in flour, baking soda and cream of tartar. Cover and chill for 2 to 3 hours. Heat oven to 375° F. Divide dough in half. Roll each half 3/16 inch thick on lightly floured cloth-covered board. Cut into desired shapes; sprinkle with granulated sugar. Place on lightly greased baking sheet. Bake 7 to 8 minutes or until light brown on edges.
Note: Source: This recipe was donated by a reader in 1999. We were later told that this is an old Betty Crocker recipe, and we found it (in slightly altered form) in an out-of-print cookbook called "Betty Crocker's Cooky Book," printed in 1963. A similar recipe is also on Betty Crocker's website.
Our note: This recipe is reprinted directly from Christmas-Cookies.com.
