Organizing Junkie says "Purge Until It Fits"

Wonderful Wednesday has arrived with a SPOTLIGHT on one of my favorite websites, I'm an Organizing Junkie, a site dedicated to organizing and "the simplicity it brings".

This particular spotlight features "Take Back Your Linen Closet"--a brilliant piece about organizing a space that can run away from the best of us!  Hope you enjoy it and...be sure to visit Organizing Junkie, subscribe to  her site, like her FB fan page and leave a nice comment on her post saying that "Ducks 'n a Row sent you"!

This post is week #20 of Laura's 52 Weeks of Organizing:
"If you are new to 52 Weeks of Organizing, catch up here!
Week 20, whoot!  Are you hanging in there?
Today I decided I wanted to talk about the linen closet.  Whether your house has a big one or one that’s not so big, it’s often a neglected space.   Regardless of the size, is yours bursting at the seams?  This might be a good week to go through the PROCESS and tackle that area.
A couple of years ago I posted about how I organized my own linen closet and I encourage you to go on over and read how I followed the PROCESS myself.  I took my overstuffed closet from this:
to this:
Those pictures are from 2007 and in my old house.  Since then I have learned to downsize even more yet after looking at the state of my new linen closet I think it’s time for another overhaul.  I’ll have to do that this week also.
I think the majority of people have just way too many sets of sheets and towels.  The general rule I write about in my book, Clutter Rehab, is two sets of sheets and towels per person.  One set of sheets for the bed and one towel per person for the towel bar.  Then one for spare.  You may also want one set of each for guests along with a few blankets.  I find Space Bags to be especially convenient in the off season to help create additional space.
Remember to purge until it fits!
With some paring down and a little creativity perhaps you can use the extra storage space you uncover for other things looking for a home…craft supplies, a donation station, kid’s clothes to grow into, extra pantry space, etc.
I just have to show you what my sister did with her linen closet."

Before you go,though, take a moment to consider how many blogs you found and enjoyed but never saw again.

Get Tomorrow Ready, Today!

By Sinea Pies

Many of us start our days out “full steam ahead”.  We run headlong into schedules, activities, appointments and responsibilities. Your morning will start so much better if you get things ready the NIGHT BEFORE.

Here are some ideas of how you can be well-prepared for a great next day!
  • Pick out your wardrobe for tomorrow and put everything in a convenient location.
  • Make sure your glasses, car keys, and wallet are in your purse, where they belong.
  • Pack your lunch.
  • Get frozen meats out to thaw for the next evening meal.
  • Check your calendar for appointments.
  • Touch base with your kids to make sure their homework and other “stuff” is ready to go.
  • Make a safety check of the house before retiring. Are the stove, iron and other appliance turned off?
  • Take the dog potty…and don’t forget to let her/him back in!  :)
  • Lock the doors.
  • Get ready for bed.
  • Turn out the lights.
  • Sweet dreams….

Tote Bags for Busy Moms

       pic4design.com
Babies have diaper bags. Students have back packs.  But what do busy moms have? Tote bags, purses, briefcases and satchels! And some have all of the above.

We've all had times when carting things around was so cumbersome that we had to do something about it.  Whether we opted for the plastic grocery bag or department store shopping bag leftover from the holidays, we've done it.  Some women have created some innovative-- and very fashionable-- ways to be efficient and have everything wherever they go.

Marie bought a bookbag, just like her teenage son has!  He's still not old enough to drive and the school he attends is halfway across town. She works there, often, as a volunteer.

Leaving something at home is unthinkable with that kind of distance to travel--time lost and gas spent.  So, Marie has packed her backpack like she's going on a camping trip! She has snacks, water bottle, first aid supplies, books and magazines to catch up on her reading, a notepad, pens, cellphone...the works!  She's prepared! If her work is completed long before her boy is done, instead of driving home and back again, she has things to do right with her. It's brilliant!

Do you have a backpack or tote for your supplies?  What is it like?  If you don't, there are a couple of things you can do to get one.

Buy one:
Leather Women's Briefcase
Or get creative and MAKE one:
All you need is a pattern, great fabric that you love to look at, and a little time. (Oh yes, a sewing machine is helpful ,too!)
From:  baggingit.typepad.com
with FREE patterns for you to use.

I particularly like the one that she links to from Skip to My Lou.  It is a tutorial with photos: "How to Make a Simple Reversible Tote Bag".  Check it out!

Chocolate Candy

By Sinea Pies
Ever crave chocolate? Crave it like crazy?
It doesn't happen to me often but one day last week it did! Yikes!  I went through my desk looking for a stray Hershey's kiss. Nothing. I went upstairs to the lobby  looking for candy in the showcase--we have a cafe and bookstore at work. Nothing. Then, I went to the few co-workers left in the building. Nada!

They have faces!

Doesn't anyone eat chocolate anymore? Or, maybe they did...all of it! Finally, a dear friend came up with a tiny little Tootsie Roll.  Better than nothing, but it still didn't satisfy the deep crave for a Snickers Bar or Reeses Peanut Butter Cup (or two or three) or some peanut M & M's. Lots of peanut M & M's!
What causes this kind of craving? I had to know!  So, I cruised the internet and found the answer on Heart of Wisdom It's a magnesium deficiency!

She says: “Studies show over 75% of Americans are dangerously deficient in magnesium. Magnesium is an essential factor in more aspects of health than any other mineral, yet rarely measured by doctors.
Chocolate cravings are a sign of a magnesium deficiency. Women's bodies scream for chocolate during PMS. Some researchers believe that women crave chocolate prior to menstruation because it contains high levels of magnesium. A lack of this important mineral can cause insomnia, depression, fatigue, migraines, anxiety, hyperactivity, panic attacks, premenstrual irritability, attention deficit disorder, bladder problems, fibromyalgia, asthma, allergies, palpitations, heart arrhythmias and more.”

Wow!  So, today I did the really smart thing and bought a bag of fun-size Snickers. :)  OK, maybe not so smart. So, I'll also go buy a calcium-magnesium supplement, too?  Been struggling with a little insomnia, so I might really need it.  But chocolate is so much more fun.

I wrote about the history of M & M's recently...maybe I was having chocolate cravings at that time, too.  Who knows!  But they are truly fun...they have faces... and a really interesting story behind them. Did you know that Mars and Hershey were the originators of M&M's way back at the time of the Spanish Civil War? Read more here: M & M Candies

And, they come as toys, too!

Chicken Recipes

If it's Monday, it's chicken! Yes, if you are like me, you can never have enough chicken recipes. Chicken has so many advantages. Chicken is cheaper. Chicken is healthier. Chicken is lighter. Chicken is cluckier! (Cluckier? Yes, cluckier!)
Hey, America really does love chicken! Any wonder that the Colonel did so well way back in 1940 when he introduced his fried chicken recipe with 11 special herbs and spices!  BTW, if you haven't tried Kentucky Fried Chicken's grilled chicken, it is a must do!  If you have to do takeout tonight, try it.  You just may find yourself kissing the original formula goodbye.  It's that good.

We recently shared a great Chicken with Artichoke Hearts on Angel Hair Pasta recipe from Martha Stewart. I've served it twice and we enjoyed it so much each time that it will be a regular in our household.

This week our best chicken recipe comes courtesy of Betty Crocker.  Interesting aside about Betty Crocker...in 1945, she was named by Fortune magazine as the second most popular American woman, bested by Eleanor Roosevelt at the number one spot.  Only thing is, Betty Crocker isn't a real person! She was the brainchild of Marjorie Child Husted, a home economist who created the Betty Crocker character. Now, that is marketing!
This quick chicken recipe from Betty Crocker is truly a 10-minute prep recipe that your family will love.  Since it is so easy and delicious, it will definitely have a return engagement in our kitchen as quick school-night cuisine.

Mom, you just put it together the night before, cover and refrigerate. Whoever is at home at the right time the next day pops it in the oven at 325° --- 40 minutes before you roll in the door! Ten minutes more to prepare the sides and dinner is done!

Whisk together the cream of chicken soup and sour cream, ladle on top of the chicken.  Cover with foil and refrigerate until time to bake. Preheat oven at 325° Uncover chicken and bake for 1 hour.

9-11, where were you?

First posted Sept. 8, 2010, updated Sept. 8, 2011

So many tributes have been given to the victims of 9-11 and, yet, not nearly enough.

There were incredible heroes that day.
Heroes in the air, especially on Flight 93 where they wrestled that plane from the highjackers and saved ...what...  The White House?  The Capitol?  Something big, full of real people.
Heroes among the rescue workers and fire fighters and onlookers. Ordinary people doing extraordinary things.

Time Square Church, just a stone's throw away, played a roll in feeding the rescue workers.  They made thousands upon thousands of peanut butter and jelly sandwiches to feed those workers, keeping them going, in their impossible mission of rescue.

And then there were the hard-to-explain events that can only be God, such as the firefighters who came out of nowhere and evacuated a nearby school.  Equipped with masks for the children's faces, they delivered them out of harm's way right before the towers came down. Who were they?  There had been no way to get that kind of help to those children in time.  It all was happening too fast, too unexpectedly.  But help did arrive.  And how many cases of "I should have been there..." stories did we all hear?

Have you noticed that the number of real tributes to the victims and heroes of 9-11 dwindled these past 9 years?  Maybe they've been waiting for the 10th anniversary. This year should certainly be a time of reflection that is done up really big.

ABC News shared a story this week of Patrick Lyons, whose courageous father was one of the fire fighters who gave his life while rescuing others at the Twin Towers.  Click here to view his story!

Every year needs a special time of remembrance.  For those of us who are baby boomers, we know that Pearl Harbor day (Dec. 7) was remembered in a big way every year with specials on TV and the printed media year after year.  It was wrong not to do it.  Even if we had been too young to really remember, we remembered anyway. Our parents and teachers made sure of it.  It was a "day in infamy", as President Roosevelt said and we all knew it.  Let's not shove our 9-11 memories away.  We must never forget.

Did you know that BLOGGERS played a big role in communications that day?  They did. This is an excerpt from an article I wrote on HubPages called "How to Blog" about the bloggers on 9-11:

"An interesting aside: blogging had a big part to play in information-flow on 9-11.That's right. Do you remember how jammed up the landlines and cell phones were on September 11, 2001? Especially if you were attempting to call into or out of New York City, you could forget it. The circuits were busy for hours.

Bloggers took to their keyboards that day, passing along news, updates, on-the-spot photos, heartfelt comments and helping others to get much needed information, as best they could. A lot of venting went on in the blogosphere that day, too, as you can well- imagine. On 9-11, blogging rose to a new level of visibility and importance."

So, where were YOU that day?  Please share your memories here in the comment section.

15 Great Uses for Baking Soda

By Sinea Pies

Baking soda is an essential and inexpensive household item that is useful in so many ways.

First and foremost, it is used for the obvious: BAKING!

Not to be confused with baking powder, baking soda is 100% sodium bicarbonate.

Baking powder has baking soda in it, along with some cream of tartar.

Baking soda and baking powder are both used to make baked goods rise by producing carbon dioxide as the batter cooks.

In addition to an essential ingredient for baking, baking soda is a great deodorizer, polisher, cleanser and even itch-remover!

Here are 15 GREAT USES for BAKING SODA!
1. Baking: As we said, baking soda is a key ingredient in most baked goods, including one of Martha Stewart's favorite dessert: CUPCAKES (check out these 31 photos of yummy specialty cupcakes)!!!  Click to buy Martha's Cupcake Cookbook here.

2. Toothpaste: You can buy toothpaste that contains the ingredient or make your own. Just put a little baking soda in a dish with some salt. Wet your brush, dip it in caking it up on the brush, and gently brush your teeth. They'll gleam!

3. Eliminate Refrigerator Smells: Open a box and put it in the frig. Mark the date on the box first and recycle every 30 days for freshness.

4. Carpet deodorizer: Sprinkle some baking soda on the carpet, leave for 15 minutes and then vacuum.

5. Exfoliate: Make a paste of baking soda and water, gently scrub your face and body for a natural, safe clean. Rinse off with water.

6.Cleaning Baby Toys: dilute 4 T. baking soda in 1 quart warm water. Use the solution to wash the toys, then rinse and wipe clean.

7. Drain Opener: pour some dry baking soda down a slow running drain. Add vinegar and listen to it fizz! Wait 10 minutes. Follow it with a quart of very hot water. Voila! Free flowing drain.

8. Insect Bites: apply a paste of baking soda and water to stop the itch.

9. Science Projects: remember the famous science fair project, the Erupting Volcano? Baking soda and vinegar are what makes it work!

10. Hair Clarifier: use a lot of gels, mousse and other sticky hair products?  Remove that build-up once a week by adding a tiny pinch of baking soda to your shampoo.  Lather up and rinse.

11. Antacid: remember the old movies where they ordered a bicarb for a sour stomach? They were asking for baking soda.  It still works today! Check the directions on the package before using.

12. Fight Fires: Keep a box of baking soda near the stove in case of a grease fire. Quickly toss some baking soda on the fire and extinguish it instantly.

Mr.Coffee Coffee Maker
13. Clean Your Coffee Maker: Make a solution of 1/4 cup of baking soda and a quart of warm water to clean your coffee maker, coffee mugs and pot.     Your coffee will taste great!

14. Remove Grease Stains from Clothes: make a paste of baking soda and water. Apply it to the stains. Add a little baking soda to the wash load, as well.

15. Freshen Your Sponges:  Sponges smelling a little raunchy? Don't give them up just yet.  Make a strong solution of baking soda and warm water and let them soak.

BONUS USE: Deodorizer Sneakers and Shoes! This works so well, I just had to add it. If you have SMELLY SNEAKERS, sprinkle baking soda into them and shake the excess out. Go head and wear them. They will be so much better. In my experience, mine no longer smelled bad at all!

Arm and Hammer is the brand name that comes to mind when we think of baking soda.  Their website is full of great baking soda ideas as well as a list of their cleaning and deodorizing products.  If you have pets, you've got to try their pet odor eliminator carpet powder.  It removes the smell and helps to get up the pet hair better than ever!

Hey Honey, Let’s Get a Dog!

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Dog Ownership.

1954 TV Stars:  Timmy & Lassie
Families with children just seem to need a pet. Wouldn't you agree?  It completes the picture. Pets can be a fun addition to any household.  Cats, birds, hamsters, lizards, bunnies, fish…even horses and turtles…can make good pets.  The all-time American favorite, though, is the dog.  Canines have been the number one choice for decades.  We can probably thank the 1954 television star, Lassie, for that!

The Good:
What makes a dog such a good pet?  Companionship!  No other animal is so devoted to its master.  Fido will greet you at the door after a hard day’s work with wiggles, a wagging tail and a big doggy grin.  For the rest of the evening, he’s your shadow.  Wherever you go, he goes.  He’s missed you!  Enter the kitchen and he’s right there. He wants to know what you’re doing. Throw the ball, he’ll fetch it.  Don’t want to throw the ball?  He’ll do his best to convince you that you do!  Time for a walk.  Fido loves his walks.  Even with a fenced yard, he still wants to go walking with you.

Roll Over Beethoven!
Dogs are also great protectors, comforters, playmates (some better than others) and are inexpensive to care for.  Medical costs will come into play if your dog gets sick but, generally, the cost of having a dog is minimal compared to the joy he brings.

Dogs are forever! Owning a dog is a life-long commitment.  Dogs have a life span of approximately 12-15 years. A dog needs a loving home where he will be a cherished family member from start to finish.

Where to begin? Owning a puppy is like having a baby.  They need constant attention, consistent training and lots of play. Do you have the kind of time that a puppy requires?  Elderly dogs have their own set of needs. Are you prepared to keep your new dog “forever”?  Fido will be faithful to you; he needs you to be faithful to him.

The Bad:
Dogs chew things.  That’s how they were made. Give your new dog a place in your house to call home along with his own bed and toys to play with. If you keep him supplied with dog-safe bones and other appropriate toys, you will minimize the chance that he will chew up your shoes, furniture and clothes.  He still bears watching, though.  He’s a dog.

Dogs have accidents.  No matter how well he’s trained to ask to go potty, there is the occasional accident.  If a dog eats something that doesn’t agree with him or has the flu (dogs can get sick, too), he may throw up in the house.  He’ll try to do it in a discreet location but it is never where you want it to be!

Dogs bite.  We hear horror stories about pit bulls and other dogs attacking people, even causing deaths. The stories are sadly true. According to Amy Holtz, founder of Hope 4 Your Canine in Pittsford NY , more often than not children are bitten by the family dog.  “Yes, children are bitten by dogs more often than adults. Of those, most of the time they were bit by their own dog.” she said.

The reason?  The child has not been taught how to properly approach a dog.  Poking the eyes, overly teasing, pulling his tail, taking away his toy while he’s playing with it, interfering while he’s eating or sleeping all can lead to a snap or nip or worse. There are a myriad of cases where the dog was instinctively reacting to protect himself and the child was hurt.

Amy has devoted much of her life to providing training for dogs and their families.  She teaches strategizes that work.  Her expertise in canine training and behavior has earned her the title of “New York’s Dog Whisperer”.
And who is sitting for whom?

One of Amy’s newest programs helps families with pets to adjust when there is a change in the wings.  It is a “When Baby Comes Home” service.  She begins working with the expectant mother, spouse and family months before the blessed event to make their house baby and dog friendly.
“New babies are a big change in everybody’s lives.” she explained
“If you already have a dog, the little bundle-of-joy may not be such a welcome arrival. After all, your dog was there first!”

Amy can help you to make it a smooth transition.  She will instruct you on how to get your house ready, practice new routines that will affect your dog and is even available to be a “Dog Nanny” for those first weeks after you and your baby come home.  The new mother can concentrate on getting some rest and taking care of the baby while Amy walks, plays with and cares for the dog.

Here is a stern safety warning from Amy for all of us: “Never, ever leave a dog alone with a child. Dogs are still dogs, no matter how well behaved they are with your children.”  “I meant it.” she added.  “When you go to the bathroom, either the dog or your child comes in with you.  They should never be left alone together.”

Picking out Fido:
Find the right breed.  Young families with little tikes will need a dog who is gentle and patient with children.  Young dogs need as much play as a toddler does, maybe even more.  All dogs need exercise and attention.  Athletic owners will probably want a dog that can go running with them.  In that case, don’t pick a low-energy, couch-potato dog.  Take your time to study the breeds and ask questions.  Talk to dog owners, dog trainers or even find an online dog forum to get sound advice.

Sweet Dreams Little One
sxc.hu
Puppy or adult?  Puppies are babies.  They eat and go potty often and they put everything in their mouths.  Be ready to take them out when they wake up, when they go to sleep, before they eat, after they eat, and in between.  Train yourself to take them outside frequently and, eventually when they’re older, they will tell you that they need to go.  Keep a close watch, too.  You’ll be taking things away from him often, till he gets the hang of it. So much of training a dog is a matter of the owner being well-trained.

“Properly trained, a man can be dog's best friend.”  ~Corey Ford  (Courtesy of QuoteGarden.com)

If you wish to start out with an adult dog, why not adopt? Contact a dog rescue organization like Rudy’s Rescue to adopt a dog.  Ask a lot of questions about his history beforehand.  Some rescue organizations, like Rudy’s,  have had the dogs live with a family for a while, kind of like a canine internship.  The host family is trained to observe the dog and gather information that will tell what type of family he might best fit in.

So, what is “the ugly”?
It is realizing, after the fact, that owning a dog is not for you.  It happens.  Do not despair, there is help.  Rudy’s Rescue, also founded by Amy Holtz, is one of many dog rescue organizations in the Rochester New York Area. You can call on them for help and advice. Rudy’s was founded to rescue Labrador Retrievers but they are very willing to advise you in finding a solution for any difficult dog situation.  And they may have some suggestions that can even turn your situation around.
Just email them at  dawgsrkids2@rudysrescue.info and tell them what’s going on.

If you aren’t sure that your family is ready for a dog, why not start out with a pet that requires a little less attention, or with a shorter life-span?  Do some online research about cats, birds, fish, bunnies, rodents (hamsters, gerbils, mice) to see if any of them is a good fit.  Having a pet can be a great adventure for you and your family to embark on together.
