How many Americans have lost touch with what Thanksgiving truly is all about?I think it may be a lot. We mention Pilgrims and Native Americans and watch Charlie Brown. We think about bountiful harvests and eat great Thanksgiving feasts. Some of us even remember the homeless and try to help.
There was "Happy Thanksgiving" chatter all over the internet today that started my train of thought. I was amazed at one group who was giving "the greeting " but reprimanded a visitor for mentioning God in their hellos. They were reminded that "religious talk" was not permitted. Really? On Thanksgiving?
That's when I looked it up. Just how did this holiday start? What was its purpose? Here is what I found. In 1789, the first President of the United States, George Washington, was asked by Congress to declare the holiday. It was very "religious."
